About the Author
Yvonne Wakefield is a Fulbright Memorial scholar, an artist and author who holds a doctorate in Human Organizational Systems, which has little to do with log cabin building. Her first book, Suitcase Filled with Nails: Lessons Learned from Teaching Art in Kuwait (Booktrope Editions, April 2013) chronicles the six years she taught fine art to Muslim women. Like building a log cabin she had no experience in the Middle East but wanted to experience teaching there and was determined to do it. Home is where the chainsaw is.

Wakefield is an unfortunate orphan. She recounts her life in the 1970s. Struggling through the chaos of a loss of family, home and direction, she sets out to a hidden wilderness in Oregon, buys land with what's left of her raided inheritance, and begins to build a cabin with nothing more than a few flea-market tools and a questionable how-to guide.
Wakefield faces a tough challenge, but in the process of building a hermitage escape from the perils of society, she pieces together a life that was ripped from her childhood: family, home and direction. This is a memoir of the human spirit emerging from the ashes.
There are two remarkable facets to Wakefield's writing that I found especially captivating. Wakefield is an artist, and sees the world through an artist's eyes. She has an ability to turn her artistic views into words, such that the colors and setting all around her become characters in their own right. Green takes on almost heroic proportions, white becomes a deadly villain.
The other facet I enjoyed is that she has put a fresh, unique angle on the New Adult genre. Elsewhere in the world of literature, New Adult has come to mean "Setting out to find one's career path." Babe in the Woods instead takes is on a path of maturation that few of us will ever have the good luck to experience personally.
Who is this book for? The obvious answer would be preppers, mountain dwellers and do-it-yourselfers, but really, this book is for young woman about to graduate, for anyone who has an artist's heart, and for readers seeking memoirs of self-discovery.
This book makes an excellent graduation gift for female grads, or as a housewarming gift. Goes great with a chainsaw.

Engrossing, adventures and fun.

One sign of a good book is that you think about it when you're not reading it. I was so engrossed in this novel that I both didn't want to put it down and also tried to draw it out because I didn't want it to end. It is fair to compare this novel to Cheryl Strayed's Wild, but I found Yvonne to be a more interesting and likable main character. Her unbelievable naiveté coupled with her stubborn independence and studied persistence was inspiring. How she managed to not kill or maim herself in the Oregon woods, by learning to fell trees by reading a book for example, is amazing. I could relate to her desires to be independent and live in harmony with her surroundings. When I was younger I held similar fantasies, but I didn't manage to realize them as she did. What a strong young woman. Like her previous book, I was sad to see it end. I wanted to know more - more about what happened next, and more about her further adventures. I await her next novel with happy anticipation!

There's a strong Gal in " Babe in the Woods"!

Yvonne's book is a real page turner, as you wonder what will happen next in the rough lifestyle she's living. She's undertaken a huge job in building a log cabin with no prior experience! As a former " back to the lander" I could identify with some of the daily struggles she faced.
The book is written in such a way that the reader is transported in time to be there, through the good and the bad. It's about her life, as well as the creation of a log cabin.
I wanted a sequel, to learn the next chapters in a strong young woman's life.
This is a book I'd highly recommend. One where you can feel like you are there, and one to show what a determined young woman can do.
