I despise textbooks that have no references in the chapters or listed at the end of the book. McGrawHill rips off students with the packages they force on campus bookstores. No reputable publisher should offer textbooks without references or some list of sources where the authors obtained their information. Forcing students to purchase on line packages, when there are free on line books seems psychopathic corporate practice.

About the Author

OBITUARY FOR R. WAYNE ALBERS, August 5, 1928 - September 28, 2013

R. Wayne Albers, Ph.D., Scientist Emeritus, Chief of Section on Enzyme Chemistry (retired), Laboratory of Neurochemistry in the NINDS, NIH, Bethesda, MD, is a world-recognized neuroscientist most noted for his research in the field of membrane cation transport and neuronal excitability in the nervous system. Dr. Albers and physiologist R.L. Post performed the principal experiments leading to their now widely-held Albers-Post model for the mechanism of the cation transport enzyme, sodium-potassium-activated ATPase. Dr. Albers was one of the founding co-editors of the comprehensive text, Basic Neurochemistry: Molecular, Cellular and Medical Aspects, first published in 1972, continuing as co-editor for 8 editions, the latest having been published in 2012. After receiving his PhD at Washington University School of Medicine in 1954, Dr. Albers embarked on a distinguished career of research at the NIH, being a founding investigator in the first Laboratory of Neurochemistry.

Dr. Albers was one of the first members of the American Society for Neurochemistry at its inception, serving on its Council and its Committees on Publications and Education and on Electronic Publications. He has served as Professor of Biochemistry at George Washington University, Faculty Member of the NIH Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences, Associate Editor of the Journal of Neurochemistry and of Experimental Neurology, and on the editorial boards of several journals.

Dr. Albers passed away on September 28, 2013. He was 85 years old and is survived by his former wife, Frances Albers, their children Gail Morrell, Belinda Caron and Patricia Steinhoff, 6 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He also had a son, the late Jonathan Albers.

Dr. Albers was considered a gentleman, an excellent scientific colleague with a keen intellect and friend by all who worked with him. He will be sorely missed, not only by his family, but also by the entire neurochemistry community.

For anyone interested in neuroscience, it is a must read. Basic Neuroscience gives a snapshot of where neuroscientists are currently doing research, including the edge of what is known and not known. Much of this knowledge has only been discovered in the last few years.

Dennis G. Zill is professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University. His interests are in applied mathematics, special functions, and integral transforms. Dr. Zill received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics and his M.S. from Iowa State University in 1967 and 1964, respectively. He received his B.A. from St. Mary's in Winona, Minnesota, in 1962. Dr. Zill also is former chair of the Mathematics Department at Loyola Marymount University. He is the author or co-author of 13 mathematics texts.

A good text on ordinary differential equations with good examples

This particular textbook concerns ordinary differential equations. There are plenty of examples, and they are worked in steps that should make the solution strategy clear to any student with at least two previous semesters of calculus. One of the unusual features of the book are essays written by mathematicians present at the end of chapters 3, 4, 5, and 9. Each essay concerns applications of concepts learned in the previous chapter. The book is well illustrated, and motivations for study are included by making the examples solve practical problems such as the charge on a capacitor, solving orthogonal trajectories of the family of a rectangular hyperbola, or even determining the half-life of a radioactive substance. This makes it ideal for engineering students. There are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter and the solutions to odd numbered problems can be found in the back of the book. Best Book Out There For ODEs

This is the best book I've come across for ordinary differential equations, and I've gone through many of them as a mathematics major! Not only did this book teach me the entire subject matter, I continue to go back to it years later whenever I need to review a technique. The explanations are lucid and clear, and the examples provided are very helpful. Most importantly, when presenting a technique, the authors break it down into all possible cases, so that you are ready to handle any type of problem assigned for hw or tests. I highly recommend this book!

Just Plain Insane in a sane kind of way.

It is interesting the kind of lifestyle each one of us is born into...is it the luck of the draw, the stars, or God's will. One of the questions asked at the beginning of this book by the author is what would you do? I thought a great deal about that question as I read this book. I think Josefina was a smart girl and she certainly was a brave girl. She was a loyal girl and she valued life. This tragic story is educational from the standpoint of what a person can be forced into having to do to save a life. She took the challenge and succeeded. In answer to her question; I don't know if I could have done what she did. I certainly would have wanted to save a life but I don't know if I could have been as strong as Josefina was. A must read to understand how deviant a person can be.

I originally purchased this book because of the news article I recently came across. This happened in Philadelphia where I am from. I thought the book would just cover the ordeal that Josefina has gone through but really it is told from beginning to the end. How she ended up where she was, her plan to get out of the cellar, and her struggles after getting out of the cellar. It has a great ending with her getting to see the children that she has lost. Terrifying - yet I could not stop reading it.

This was recommended to me after reading Michelle Knight's book about the Cleveland Kidnapping women free after 10 years. This book has some horribly gruesome details and scares the crap out of me! But I read it in one day because I could not put it down.
