A practitioners guide to design, circa 1969

"Norman Potter was an English cabinetmaker, designer, poet, and teacher," according to the back cover. This book is partly an autobiography of his career, partly a broad-brush guide to good design, and partly his personal insight into what it meant to be a British designer in the post WWII era. It ranges widely into all major aspects of the designer's world. I found the book often persuasive and interesting. The visually engaged should note that there are no pictures or drawings.

I found the book to be personal, engaging, and somewhat idiosyncratic in its approach: other designers might have seen the design world differently.

He writes the book for students, and "by the word 'student' I mean those who still question what they are doing, and ask why."

"Design is a socially negotiated discipline, and there are telling respects in which design questions are political questions." This statement will come as no surprise to current developers of housing and industrial sites, where planning and political negotiation can consume years.

Potter refers, moralistically, to such problems by noting "four main characteristics of modern industrial society: Its vastly complicated nature. Its continuous stimulation of, and reliance on, the deadly sins of greed, envy, and avarice. Its destruction of the content and dignity of most forms of work. Its authoritarian nature, owing to organization in excessively large units."

As Potter notes, "every human being is a designer..." and, the broad world of design affects "every field that warrants pause and careful consideration, between the conceiving of an action and a fashioning of the means to carry it out, and an estimation of its effects." For many of us, "it is perfectly possible to study design simply by doing it."

Potter is no great respecter of titles: "The words by which people describe themselves -- architect, graphic designer, interior designer, etc. -- become curiously more important than the work they actually do."

His view on constraints remains valid: "Designers get accustomed to the support of many constraints (limiting conditions) in the way they normally work. Remove these and it is like putting an engine out of gear suddenly, it returns to idling speed, or feels purposeless when accelerated. No elitist, "the study of vernacular form...is a source of joy to the spirits and the senses."

The difficulty of design is "in the realization of a design, against criteria that become increasingly elusive. This is the realm of the senses, of imagination, and of judgment." I suspect that Apple's Steve Jobs would have agreed, and also with "the importance of questions, and...the resourcefulness of attitude that prompts them." "Technique must be kind to the user and not only 'technically effective'." On the understanding of such issues, great fortunes have been built.

The book contains, also, a long list of axioms, questions for designers, a checklist for students, and much practical advice, some of which may remain meritorious for a current professional designer, or one in training.

One of the best design books I've come accross

I rented this book from my graduate college's library.
I had to own a copy. This book is one of the most direct and best explained
writings I've come across, that deals with what designers do and how our though process
works and is developed.

Potter has an easy with words and his ideas/concepts come across very fluently and easily.
The book still has a powerful resonance, even if it was written decades ago.

Highly recommended for Designers from every field.

Monk like clarity and restraint, mostly.

It's very methodical and seems to have almost a religious level of devotion to the process. Yet the simple rules and checklists are very practical as well as the political realm of thought he applies to his practice. The design of the book itself is nicely done, good paper and typesetting, very classic and british. This book is read in Yale's design MFA I understand and it's easy to see why, the author is smart and cares about the outcome doing what it needs to do.

A 400-page memoir from the Quiet Beatle? Can it be? Well, yes and no: only about 60 pages of this earnest tome, originally published in 1980, are devoted to Harrison's recollections of life before, during and (notably) after the Beatles. His memories, which manage to feel fresh and distant at the same time, come to readers via transcripts of his conversations with Derek Taylor (1932-1997), the Beatles press officer and ghostwriter of Brian Epstein's memoir. Harrison (1943-2001) was only in his late 30s when I Me Mine came out-the Beatles had formed, changed music forever and disbanded before his 28th birthday. The rest of this volume consists of photos with whimsical captions ("the author enjoying a cheese sandwich with some friends" is assigned to a picture of Harrison with a sitar) and facsimiles of his handwritten lyrics (including a fairly different version of "Taxman"), each accompanied by a brief explanation (ideas expressed in "It's All Too Much," for example, were inspired by LSD and "confirmed in meditation"). Most of the songs were composed after Harrison's immersion in Hinduism; divorced from their melodies, lyrics espousing love, peace and harmony tend to take on a certain sameness. This volume offers much to Beatles zealots, but for the casual fan, Harrison will likely remain as admirable and as inscrutable as ever. B&w photos and illustrations throughout.

Originally released in 1980, this volume includes some very casual recollections by "the quiet one" about his life, including his Liverpool childhood and interest in music, meeting the other kids who would become the 20th century's most influential band, his fascination with Eastern religions, and more. The book features roughly 50 photos taken throughout his life, but the meat of the book is the more than 80 song lyricsDmany of which are reproductions of his hand-written sheets with corrections intactDalong with background on each. There is also a new introduction by Harrison's widow. For millions of diehard fans, there is no such thing as too much information on the Beatles, so this should circulate well.

'I, ME, MINE' is a tasteful, expanded reprint of the closest thing to a George Harrison autobiography.' TIME OUT (4 11 Dec). The DAILY EXPRESS has also given the book a mention. 'If sales of THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY are anything to go by, public demand for new Beatles product is as strong as ever. While, I, ME, MINE is not strictly speaking a new book, such is its rarity, except at Beatles memorabilia fairs (at vastly inflated prices) that is 400 pages and 200 illustration will be treated asa newly discovered treasure trove of insider detail about the biggest band in pop history.' Barry Forshaw PUBLISHING NEWS 9/8/02 Olivia Harrison is not doing any interviews apart from an American chat show (although there has been a lot of interest from the national press) and we do not have serial rights, so we are concentrating on reviews for I, ME, MINE. Capitol Records released 2 versions of George Harrison's last studio album, "Brainwashed", on 19/11. The memorial concert at the Royal Albert Hall has been covered in HELLO and some nationals.

A Real Gem

Be warned that this is not an autobiography in its entirety. However, it contains the most true biographical content you will find in print about George Harrison. This book is made up of three parts. The first is a short biographical section written by George himself, and by a man by the name of Derek Taylor, a very close friend of George's. While that section is far shorter than any curious fan of George's would like, it is none the less very entertaining, and funny. A true "Must Read", if you will. The second section is the words to nearly all of his songs that were written prior to 1980, when the book first came out. Along with the words are a comment from George about each song. Many of the comments are quite amusing and insightful. The third section is made up of photographs. This edition also comes with an introduction to the writing of this book by George's wife, Olivia, that is truely endearing. If you want to begin to get an idea of George Harrison's sense of humor and personal views on a wide variety of subjects, and if you just plain love George Harrison, GET THIS BOOK! Amen.

I WANT TO TELL YOU

As an inveterate Beatles' fan, it comes as no surprise that I would heartily endorse this book. Long dubbed the Quiet Beatle and other similar cliches, George Harrison does indeed offer his voice and reflections in this work. Always a private man, George's wordings here can be described as almost cryptic.
This work provides readers with a "glimpse" of George growing up; the former Beatle describes his working class roots in Liverpool, his musical muse and later, his work as a gifted composer, guitarist and lyricist. Indeed, George Harrison has expanded musical horizons; in 1965 he became enamored of the sitar and included it on several songs on "Rubber Soul" and later collections.
His lifelong quest for spiritual knowledge and core belief system are explored; indeed, it is in his own words he explains that he does not follow an "organized" or "traditional" religion, but rather bases his spiritual feelings around his internal beliefs.
I like the input the artist's wife Olivia offered; her words are a welcome and added treat to this work. Indeed, it is Olivia's contribution that make the reissue of this work even better and more effective in touching readers.

Check out Guitar George, he knew all the chords

It has never been acceptable merely to be passionate about The Beatles collectively: You MUST have a personal favorite. John Lennon was always mine, by dint of his court jester persona and his wordsmithing, with George Harrison a close second. Being shy myself, I identified with the so-called Quiet Beatle and liked his scornful "don't bother me" attitude, which was integral to so many of his songs. Harrison's meticulous and versatile guitar work, never show-offish and always tasteful, was my main inspiration for wanting to learn to play, too. The Beatle least comfortable with his immortality, Harrison could be openly contemptuous of Beatlemania and often referred to himself ruefully as Beatle George, a title he felt he could never live down. Off-putting to some, maybe, his cantankerousness only made Harrison more interesting to me.
Predictably, Harrison takes a larkish approach to telling his life story. In his foreword, he facetiously calls "I Me Mine" (named after a forgettable tune from "Let It Be") "a little ego detour," but the book's tone is actually rather self-effacing. It's not an autobiography per se, although there is a six chapter text section that hits the high points of Harrison's life up until that time (late Seventies) and allows the mystical Beatle to rhapsodize on some of his passions: spirituality, gardening and, surprisingly, Formula One motor racing. Written by Harrison in a conversational style, with extensive "notes" by longtime Beatles confidant/press officer Derek Taylor, the text is a rambling sketch of a very private man determined to stay that way. (A clue to Harrison's reticence is found in the book's "backword," where he includes the cryptic quote, "Tell not all that you know because he who tells all that he knows, often tells more than he knows.") Luckily for his admirers, Harrison would more forthcoming, particularly on Beatle matters, in "The Beatles Anthology".
The photo section (48 black and white plates) is extraordinary, with lots of unique snaps that haven't seen print before in countless other Beatle books. Two of my favorites: a box of Good News chocolates, the inspiration for Harrison's "Savoy Truffle" from "The White Album," and a cancelled check for one million pounds paid to Inland Revenue, which the notorious taxman-baiter calls "punishment for being cheeky and making lots of money."
The bulk of the book is devoted to examining Harrison's songs, beginning with "Don't Bother Me" from "Meet the Beatles" (1964) through "Blow Away" from the excellent "George Harrison" LP (1979). For each song, Harrison provides a brief (usually) insight into his inspiration and shares his original, handwritten lyric sheets, replete with notes and illustrations. While words were never really Harrison's forte, it's still fascinating to glimpse a Beatle's creative process in such detail. The book includes the final versions of Harrison's songs as they were recorded, and it's interesting to compare them to the working models. "Taxman," in particular, was very rough indeed until Lennon offered Harrison the use of his acid pen - a fact Harrison curiously fails to mention here.
TRIVIA NOTE: The book's first edition was a signed, limited edition of 2,000 numbered copies, hand-bound in leather, by Genesis Publications, Ltd., Guildford, Surrey, England. My humble copy of "I Me Mine" is a 1980 Simon and Schuster edition, a birthday present from my sister (George was her favorite Beatle) in 1983.

Medieval Catholic German Mysticism at its best.

This is not for everyone. The language is a bit flowery and archaic. The author assumes knowledge of the faith as he was writing more for monks than the general public. However, if you are willing to sit down and engage in Lectio Divino with this work you will be amply rewarded. Patience wins all. Committing oneself into the hands of God and seeking His guidance while thoughtfully mulling each chapter is the way to read this book.

About the Author
Gerald F. Combs, Jr. is internationally recognized as a leader in Nutrition, having published widely and conducted research ranging from fundamental studies with cultured cells and animal models to human metabolic and clinical investigations. His specialties include the metabolism and health roles of minerals and vitamins, and the linkages of agriculture and human health in national development. He has published more than 300 scientific papers and reviews and 14 books, and is an Emeritus Professor of Nutrition at Cornell University.

James P. McClung, Ph.D., is a nutritional biochemist whose past and current research focuses on micronutrient nutrition at both the basic and applied levels. He has expertise in the areas of iron, selenium, and zinc nutrition. Ongoing experiments in his laboratory include studies investigating the impact of poor iron status on health and performance in both humans and animals. Dr. McClung currently serves on the editorial boards of a number of leading nutrition journals, including Advances in Nutrition and the British Journal of Nutrition. He received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of New Hampshire and his Ph.D. from Cornell University.

This book is the 7th every reprint book published by the Holt, Rinehart, and Winston company. This classic Peanuts book features strips from 1957-1959. You can also find these strips in a newer book titled "Fly, You Stupid Kite, Fly."

Absolutely great!

This wonderful collection of Peanuts cartoons was originally published in 1959. As with other Peanuts books, this one has two strips of four frames each, all of then from 1957-59. This means that these stories include Lucy, Violet, Pig-Pen and Schroeder, but not Sally or Rerun.

As with all of the Peanuts books, this one is absolutely great, and if you can get it, then do so! In it you will see Linus as a wild-eyed fanatic, Lucy as a bug-enthusiast, and Snoopy as a vulture!

As an aside, it is in this book that Charlie Brown first revealed (to his pencil-pal and us) that his father is a barber and his mother a housewife.

This is a course in real analysis directed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in mathematics and related fields. Presupposing only a modest background in real analysis or advanced calculus, the book offers something to specialists and non-specialists. The course consists of three major topics: metric and normed linear spaces, function spaces, and Lebesgue measure and integration on the line. In an informal style, the author gives motivation and overview of new ideas, while supplying full details and proofs. He includes historical commentary, recommends articles for specialists and non-specialists, and provides exercises and suggestions for further study. This text for a first graduate course in real analysis was written to accommodate the heterogeneous audiences found at the masters level: students interested in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, education, engineering, and economics.

Excellent textbook for review, but this is not a first course.

In the author's preface, he states that the prerequisites are "one semester of advanced calculus or real analysis at the undergraduate level". So, this book cannot be judged as an 'intro to real analysis'.

I just want to comment on how I have experienced this book. Let me mention that I am using this for self-study after completing a course using Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis (we covered every chapter except Ch. 10 on integration in R^n). I picked this up to review analysis with the goal of covering function spaces and measure theory with more emphasis that Rudin. This book does just that! But, I also wanted a book that stays in R for the Lebesgue measure. Having read the first 3 chapters of Folland, I didn't really think I 'understood' the material even though I could do the exercises (but not without a lot of sweat and coffee). (At one point I felt I became a function: [input] facts, assumptions then [output] proofs, ie hw exercises.) Folland does everything for abstract measures and treats the Lebesgue measure as a corollary.

Having said that, this books hits the spot.

A previous reviewer said this book was informal, unprofessional, and chatty. I do agree with him on that the book is very informal in the exposition and is chatty. I feel that this might be very distracting for those who do not wish to be specialists in analysis, or to those who are seeing analysis for the first time. However, for someone who has finished, say Baby Rudin, this book IS AMAZING. His chatty 'foreshadowing' is the best part, since by now you are trying to see the 'big picture'. In this respect, the chattiness tells of the shortcomings of the previous theory and points one to the right questions to ask.

I think this book shines for the purpose of an intermediate course between Baby Rudin and graduate real analysis ala Folland. As such, the exercises are at the perfect level and include standard, important, and interesting results and extensions. I don't think this book is rigorous enough for a real course at the graduate level, however.

A final note, the editorial (why?)'s placed throughout do get annoying but I feel they make sure you do not take results for granted, an all too common habit when reading advanced math.

I highly recommend this text, especially for self-study.
This book is like taking a course one who loves the subject and knows it very well.
And what is more, she wants to communicate her knowledge to you.
She has anticipated your difficulties and is prepared to guide you.
The material is well motivated; the historical asides help you understand and appreciate the material even more.
There are a lot good exercises.
One caveat is that analysis is on R not R^n.
The material is pitched at the senior level.
I wish I had this book when I was studying this subject.
