A Very Good Practical Guide for Optimization of Petroleum Production Systems

If you are involved in oil and gas production from reservoirs, through wells to gathering network, processing facility, and to the sales point, you will do yourself and your company a favor for getting this book and more importantly do what Burney suggested in this book. This is especially true in the most challenging time as it is now when the oil price has been depressed for so long.

The approaches, workflows, methodologies, examples in the book will lead you and your company to either increase oil and gas production rates or reduce production deferrals from your reservoirs and wells. The most beautiful part is that you can accomplish these goals with small or no costs in some situations.

I have worked in production system optimization for the last 30 years. We have done many things Burney described in this book. I can testify that everything Burney described will work with solid efforts. We did bean-up wellhead chokes, deepened lift gas injection depths, regularly rerouted wells to different headers (high pressure or low pressure headers) as well flowing characteristics or operating condition changed for the goal to increase production rates, reduce deferral, or improve operating efficiency, or all of them at the same time. We also built our organizational capabilities so that our asset teams can carry out the production system optimization on their own while we provided guidance, support, and coaching from the center of the organization. As we moved along on our optimization journey, we have created tools for sustaining production optimization process by automating some routine and tedious parts of the workflow as suggested by Burney. Once we got good in the routine optimization, we have moved towards what is called as model based operational support where optimization is supported by real-time data and fit-for-purpose asset models. This journey and progression helped us to march beyond the optimization paradox Burney described on page 246 in the book. We have moved to the stage when our engineers can answer (1) if production is optimized any time for an asset, and more importantly (2) what can be done to make the system optimized if it is not. I wished Burney’s book was available years ago so that we could use it as a manual when started with our optimization journey from the very beginning.

If you and your company can rigorously follow the suggestions Burney described in the book, you will be at a competitive advantage. It is good to make this book accessible to reservoir engineers, petroleum engineers, production engineers, surveillance champions, facility engineers, and operations teams in the company.

I quite enjoy Burney’s writing style. He added appropriate anecdotes throughout the book to make it entertaining to read. It sets an excellent example in handling highly technical topics that could easily become dry (and boring) quickly.

In summary, this is a very good book as a practical guide for optimization of petroleum production systems.

I wish I had read this earlier in my career!

In my endeavours to develop an integrated production management standard at my company, I was told to read this work. I finished it in 2 days, absolutely loved it and it didn’t feel like ‘work’ at all!

I wish I had read this earlier in my career or others than I have tried to influence in the past had. However as Burney says, it’s up to you to explain the value of data, prepare the economics for your project and educate others.

I particularly liked the balance of theory dispersed with real world examples from Burney’s extensive career along with some humour to maintain interest.

I would highly recommend any facilities, production, reservoir or operations engineer, or those interested in the oil and gas industry, to read this book. Burney is also very receptive to feedback and helping you on your own PSO journey.

The key word is "Practical"

Burney runs an excellent course on the subject and this book is the next best thing. Being a simulation nerd, it was refreshing to learn about some much simpler methods for finding potentially much bigger opportunities much faster than the time taken to build and optimise a Maximus network model, though it pains me to say it. Though Integrated Production System models have their place in Burney's methods, who knew what value there is in actually talking to Operators before getting too sunk into the input data?

The key word is "Practical"; it's a very easy read and I would recommend it to any Upstream Process or Production Engineer.

The numbers are on the pages and so are all the things to count. In a double-page spread at the back of the book, Murphy suggests lots of activities and games for parents to use in the kitchen and at play to make preschoolers' first steps into addition and multiplication more fun. Doubles made fun and easy

Love this book! The kids always love the doubles that are happening in the book, and they all especially love the ending! The boy works hard and then finds a friend to help with the hard work. It is a book they read over and over in the classroom and enjoy! Really reinforces the doubles in a creative storyline.

Cute story, but not so great at teaching math concepts

I am disappointed that I made this purchase because my main goal was to teach the math skill, not just to have a cute book for our bookshelf. There are some good and bad things about the book.

Pros: The illustrations are adorable and younger children will be drawn to the book. I would say it's geared to children under 7. I like the concept of the story where a boy is taking care of 5 ducks and then they each bring home a friend so he needs double the items to take care of them (food, hay for a bed, etc). I also think it is great that at the end of the book there are two full pages for the parents that give a bunch of activities you can do with your child to reinforce the idea of doubling. On another positive note my sons loved it. I'm not saying they LEARNED from it, but rather that as a stand alone story they found it entertaining.

Cons: The prose reads a little awkwardly. It's not a rhimey book which is fine but it also doesn't sound that smooth to read aloud to a child as many great kid's books do. From a math perspective (which is why I purchased it) I was actually very disappointed. I don't think the book does a good job of bringing the concept of doubling down to the child's level. As the latter half of the book is dedicated to the care of the ducks once there is a double amount, the author should remind young children how many of each thing was needed beforehand. Pages later a small child isn't going to remember how much there was in the first place for the five ducks so I doubt this is going to help them understand that the number is "doubled" which is the point of the book.

For example, on page 22 the book shows the boy feeding all 10 ducks. the only thing it says on the page is "I need double the food, six sacks a day, to feed to my ten little ducks" and to the right their is a picture of 6 sacks of grain and a big number 6. The number 3 (that is doubled) is not mentioned at all on this page. The child would have to be able to remember back from page 10 that the boy fed 5 ducks with 3 bags. I would like to see the math equation also referenced even if it's just a small part of the picture like showing two separate groups of 3 adding up to 6.

I ordered another book about doubling and if you check my other reviews in a few days I'll let you know what I think of that one for teaching the math skill.

Not so great

I bought this item to teach the concept of doubles to first grade students mainly because I like the way that math concepts are introduced in Stuart J Murphy books. However, I was not at all impressed with this book. The text does not clearly indicate doubles, and the story is a bit senseless. I decided not to use it for teaching purposes at all. I have many Stuart J Murphy books and would recommend many of them for instruction or for introducing a new topic depending upon the grade level knowledge of the student or students, but I cannot recommend this one AT ALL.

I have taught biochemistry to medical students and to undergraduates and graduate students, at both Temple University School of Medicine and at Case Western Reserve University, since 1968, so that I have had a great deal of experience in the field and have a feel for what works well for medical students.
Medical Biochemistry at a Glance would be an excellent book for USMLE Step 1. In my experience, medical students (and pre-medical students) would greatly benefit from reading it in preparation for the exam.
This compares very well with Lippincott’s Biochemistry - this has the right price and approach to compete with Lippincott for a less expensive and more accessible alternative to the larger text books that are out there.
I like the way it combines the metabolic pathways and principles in such a creative fashion, and the metabolism sections are among the best I have read and the easiest to understand. Metabolism is a very complicated subject and, in my experience, most teachers of the subject would really benefit from your text. (Richard W. Fantastic Book

This is a great book for any medical professional, whether doctor, researcher, med student or nutritionist. It captures the major metabolic pathways in an easy to read format, with just the right mix of text and diagrams. The author's larger volume entitled Biochemistry at a Glance has even more in-depth information on the pathways, but fewer clinically relevant tidbits. I own and use both books. In fact, they are part of my go-to library of must-have reference books, spending more time out on the desk than sitting on the shelf.

I don't know if these come in an electronic format, but I bought the paper editions. With lots of graphics, ink colors and oversized pages, I think this would translate poorly into an eBook.

Great little Supplement for visual learning of Medical Biochemistry

This book saved me in the first year of medical school. I had a very poorly organized biochemistry textbook, with lectures that were not any better. I am a visual learner and needed large, detailed pictures that give an idea of the 'big picture.' That is where this small text excelled. Most of the major, basic pathways needed in medical biochemistry are covered--from TCA cycle to purine, pyrimidine, fat, and amino acid metabolism. I was not a science major in college so I needed major reviews on biochemistry.

Each 'system' is usually depicted on 2 adjacent pages, with many annotations, and usually a short, concise clinical note; but overall the majority of the page is taken up by the diagrams.

If you like systems diagrams to learn with, and need some good, visual, 'big picture' biochemistry study aids, I highly recommend this text.

Excellent - in the same league as Salway's Metabolism at a Glance!

Way back in 1998 I came across Salway's Metabolism at a Glance, and ranked it as Excellent, Concise and Thorough! I would give the same designation to this book as well. Snippets of information are provided in each chapter, and under each diagram, that succinctly provide crucial information on each specific pathway - information that would be quite useful to a medical student or to a bio-medical researcher studying mammalian or human metabolism.

E. Nesbit's The New Treasure Seekers takes us back to the start of the last century and the six Bastable children who get into scrapes by always trying to be good. Older children will sympathise with the senior Bastables as their younger siblings create havoc - while all listeners will chuckle at their Just William-type antics. This Bastable book stands on its own but the earlier The Treasure Seekers and The Wouldbegoods are also available. And though they sound as though they are being read by a cast of dozens, it's because reader Teresa Gallagher gives every character a distinct voice - an amazing performance. Nesbit wrote three books about the Bastables: The Story Of The Treasure Seekers, in which the six Bastable kids look for treasure to restore treir family's fallen fortunes, New Treasure Seekers, a beautiful collection of wonderful Bastable adventures, and the Wouldbegoods, in which the motley troop goes on vacation with their cousins, form the soceity of Wouldbegoods, (in which the motive is to do one good deed a day) and fail miserably. The first thing Noel does is climb the chimney and fetch down a few bricks, a bird nest and a couple tons of soot. Wouldbegoods is by far the best, but if tou want to read it free go to Google.com, type in New Treasure Seekers, click on first choice and you can red either New Treasure Seekers or Wouldbegoods at your leisure.

Illustrates How and Why Developmental Capacity Matters in the Working World

This text builds on Jennifer Berger's "Changing on the Job," which outlines the different ways in which one can make meaning (i.e., one's developmental capacity). This new text also does that, but goes one step further by showcasing through storytelling what it looks like, in practical work settings, to hold a self-transforming way of making meaning. Since operating from this capacity is a little foreign to me at this stage in my life, I really appreciated seeing how it could play out. As I continue on my journey as a scholar and practitioner in student affairs/higher education, I anticipate on returning to this text as well as "Changing on the Job." In fact, I see myself utilizing both texts in potential future classes I teach in student affairs/higher education.

An easy to read journey into leading in worlds where everything changes constantly and the way forward is not clear. Garvey Berger and Johnston understand complexity and have practical suggestions for leading through uncertainty even when the stakes are high.

Great example of how to convey complex theory by telling a compelling story!

I loved the way the authors have succeeded in finding a form which combines the ongoing telling of a story (based on real practice experience I presume), with introduction/reflection on theory, models, simple practice habits etc. It made the book very engaging both emotionally and intellectually. It was quite a treat to see that work so well, especially since in my own PhD I have myself been experimenting with this idea of an alternative form and exploring ways to combine a compelling narrative with analytical reflections/discussions – so I was very happy to see an example of that really working out well.

I believe this book offers great support for promoting the ideas of adult development and a complexity approach to leadership.
