About the Author
Mike Gray (1935―2013) was an engineer, screenwriter, and author. He was the co-founder of The Film Group, a Chicago-based production company.

Ira Rosen is a producer for CBS's 60 Minutes and a freelance writer. He lives in New York City.

Fascinating Read!

I was only 10 year old when this accident occured and for most of my life I had no idea what had happened. In the late 90s I watched a documentary created by National Geographic. I was amazed by the story! When I went searching for a book on the subject I gravitated towards Mike Gray's. He was the screenwriter for "The China Syndrome", he's an engineer, and was on the ground at TMI when the story was unfolding, just weeks after the release of the movie!

The narative is wonderful, and sharp, and keeps the reader in the mind-set of those in the thick of it. It moves like a fast paced novel and you can feel yourself cringe when the engineers and managers miss a vital clue and are pushed deeper into trouble. I enjoyed that fact that they gave a little background on the main problems in the industry, that led to the problems at TMI. Gray doesn't place too much blame on any one person, instead he blames the system and the design, and the arrogance of those that think nothing bad can happen. Good, very smart men, made some really bad decisions, not because they weren't clever enough, but because the environment itself doesn't lend itself to making good decisions.

A great book! I have read it twice and still get goosebumps.....

Harrowing true story of the Three Mile Island nuclear accident

a harrowing blow-by-blow description of exactly what happened at Three Mile Island, every step of the way. Gripping, terrifying, compelling - and every word of it true. I received the book from Amazon at about 6:30 p.m. and read until my eyes couldn't focus; by 10:30 this morning, I'd finished.

If you haven't read this book, you must. "Human error" and "engineering oversight" don't begin to cover it. This is what catastrophe looks like. This is all the places a nuclear reactor and those who run it can go off the rails.

This March 28, TMI marks its 35th anniversary. I am hopeful that just because it comes only 17 days after the third anniversary of Fukushima that we do not ignore its significance. I will be posting a special Nuclear Hotseat on Three Mile Island on Tuesday, March 25 (NuclearHotseat.com/blog). Until then, I urge you: Read THE WARNING and realize that's exactly what it is.

A book that should have been much better

Storaro always got the finest looking prints and lab work,
and his films are stunning ,But the reproductions in this book
look like as bad as the video for "1900",They are printed on
nice paper in a nice hardcover,but the source for these images
is pretty poor,
I would love to see what a 4000 line scanned capture from
the original source would look like printed the same way.
But that would mean getting Studios like Paramount involved,
Which might mean that the book never came out.Since they
can't even be trusted to release his best work on dvd.
It seems odd that Storaro who seems to demand such high Quality
from his labs,would Ok such poor reprints of his films.
Still with so many of his films unavailable on dvd,This Book
is still worth getting.

Great Miscarriage Of Justice

I read this book a few years ago and found it fascinating. Although it is a long book I found it to be easy to read and fairly well written.A young baby goes missing,carried off into the night by a dingo,never to be seen again.The parents are charged with her murder but the evidence is at best,absurd and the attitude of Australia at this time is outrageous! This book is a first hand version of what happened as it is written by the mother accused of killing her baby.She tells this story with sadness at the cicumstances her family found themselves in. The police and research work for this case was a total shambles and Lindy Chamberlain and family suffered greatly because of this.Even as you read this book you know yourself that something is wrong with the way things seem to be going.Lies,rumours,pettiness and hatred are directed at this family but no motive or reason is given why this woman should feel the need to kill her child. A sad tale of a family whose lives are ruined by the verdict decided long before the case was ever brought to trial.

The only problem was...it said it was a paperback book, and it wasn't..it was a old unreturned library book, its huge! not that I have a problem with big books, it did say "paperback" and it was a hard back book, a little big to be carrying around....

Not her best work

Every June I look forward with eager anticipation to another five-star Elin Hilderbrand Nantucket beach read. Until this year, each novel has been more nuanced and delicious. Hilderbrand was going through surgery and radiation for breast cancer, I'm also a survivor, and had similar surgery and chemo. I couldn't have written a novel, some days I could barely brush my hair. That's why I feel bad giving s less than great review to one if my favorite writers.

THE RUMOR is filled with big and little rumors, some true, some not, some wishful thinking. The first Rumor is that Nantucket writer Madeline King is having an affair with her best a friend Grace's husband. Grace is on the cusp of an affair with her gardener, but that Rumor will be hidden for a while. Suffering from writer's block, Madeline uses her friend's secret romance as a way to break her lack of creativity. What could possibly go wrong?

THE RUMOR is told in short chapters from different third person POVs, but unlike most of Hilderbrand's previous novels, none of the voices were unique or felt special. Even though I read THE RUMOR in one day, there was almost zero tension, even when there should have been. None of the characters felt particularly memorable and I found the plethora of names not found among common people (Calgary. Brick. Allegra. Benton. McGuvvy. Sterling. Bridger.) to be distracting.

Elin Hilderbrad might be a victim of her and own success. She has set the bar high, and readers like me will probably expect the same level of excellence, despite having a tumultuous year. I'd rather have waited a few months, or even another year for a novel on par with her previous books. For another writer, THE RUMOR might be considered a career high, but for me it lacked luster and uniqueness. I'm still a huge fan and I can't wait to preorder her next book.

Hilarious!

As someone who grew up in a small town, I immediately identified with this book. No one was immune from being the object of gossip and very few refused to repeat rumors. Similar to the telephone game we played as children, people changed one word in an otherwise innocent story, transformed it into a juicy tale, which spread around town via the small drugstore like wildfire. As was true in The Rumor, some stories were true, but separating fact from fiction was impossible. Thus people assumed that all rumors were based on fact.

The characters were wonderful caricatures. Picturing Grace wiping each leaf of her multitude of rose bushes with a solution of lemon juice and water made me laugh out loud. A large spread in the Boston Globe meant almost as much to her as her torrid affair with her gardener. And all the while her husband was running a prostitution ring, although he never thought of it that way. After all, this family was the upper crust of the island.

Elin, on a personal note, I like to think of The Rumor as your "getting well" book. Your wry, quirky humor was on every page, as well as your love for Nantucket. Thank you for providing me with several hours of pure entertainment.

Easy summer read but not one of her bests

Easy summer read but not one of her bests; I found all of the weird character names to be very distracting and I found myself confused by the different viewpoints because all of the characters sounded the same, none of them had very memorable qualities that stood out. Fast Eddie does not seem like a person truly found on Nantucket; his marriage to Grace did not seem to make much sense based on their personalities. I was able to read the book in one long beach day and it kept me entertained, just not as gripping as some of her older novels.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a very *unique* book in terms of contents and approach. Unlike most other books in the area of wireless communications, its approach is rather from electromagnetic theories (or physics), which is particularly interesting. Also, noise is explained in detail based on antenna temperature. Chapters 6 and 7 are also interesting. For example, the concept of LOS horizon should be useful in the research for long-range communications. Finally, as in this book, it is always good to have examples at the end of each chapter. ... this book might be possibly considered as�supplemental material for teaching certain courses ... . Also, it is an excellent monograph for researchers in the area of wireless communications.

What is there to like in "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications"? A lot!

The author begins with a brief but fascinating tour of the history with "An Introduction to Modern Wireless Communications." The chapter is beautifully written and nicely laid out with photos and graphics. The author includes stories of some of the great early physicists and their experiments that led to modern day technology. The breakthroughs of people like Marconi are brought to life in a very memorable way. (Marconi's entrepreneurial inventions enabled shore to ship communications and led to the unanticipated discovery of the ionosphere.) Fascinating background ....

Next, Dr. Granatstein winds his way through a noisy century of scientific and engineering discoveries in radio. You quickly catch up with today's wireless technologies in cell phones, local area networks and satellite communication systems all have grown out of these fundamental principles.

Chapters 3 and 4 present mutually-reinforcing chapters on "Antennas" and "Antenna Arrays". I always wondered how antennas worked - this explains it well. Chapter 5, "Radio Frequency (RF) Wave Propagation" helps you think about propagation challenges - "reflection, refraction, absorption, multipath phase interference and diffraction." These are real world problems for deployments.

By the time you reach chapter 7, you'll start to realize the level of math required to master this subject - this chapter is packed with all sorts of equations.

This book explains the basics of how signals are created, transmitted, and received. But it rapidly accelerates into more advanced territory. The equations of electromagnetic radiation will challenge even the most determined. On the other hand, the figures and graphics are crystal clear and easily accessible to even the most casual reader.

In addition to being full of theory, this book is well populated with practical descriptions of how theory plays out in practice. Simple diagrams convey common material. Figures in chapter 5 depict the basic geometries of waves propagation. Graphics in chapter 6 nicely and simply describe the operation of wireless microwave bridges.

The author is a true expert on his subject. He has a Ph.D in electrical engineering and held positions at Bell Labs, the Naval Research Lab, and conducted decades of research and teaching in a university setting. He has studied, researched, practiced, taught, and now written about the subject. This is as authoritative as an author can be.

The text itself emerged from teaching material to senior EE students, grad students, and engineers working in communication companies. In less than 250 pages of text, the author conveys an important body of knowledge that has been collected over roughly the past 150 years. This book could easily be used in a classroom setting, as a main text or supplemental reading.

So many wireless gadgets are in use today that they are shaping our culture as well as our future technology pathways. "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications" provides a strong foundation for understanding the drivers and implications. It ranks as the best book I've seen (by far) on the physics of wireless communications.
