A highly effective cross between Minto and Strunk & White

Despite what the digerati say, the written word remains one of the most powerful forms of communication. Unfortunately the number of good business writers is few and the amount of business writing is great. Carter Daniel has created a helpful, instructional and accessible tool for people who have to make the transition from writing academic reports to creating business communications. Reader-friendly reports presents the basic rules of good business writing in the style of Strunck and White's elements of style.

The book is organized around elements of the writing as opposed to elements of the idea or communication, that can be found in Barbara Minto's Pyramid Principle. Daniel's organization and approach makes the book accessible for those entering the workforce. Professionals looking to brush up their writing will have to to work a little harder as they 'go back to school.' It is well worth the effort.

Learning how to write a powerful, persuasive and readable business report is tough work that often requires breaking bad habits or habits that worked in school but not in the business world. This book helps you do this on your own by pointing out weak points and providing positive examples. This book is not just for MBAs or Consultants, rather its applicable to everyone.

Highly recommended for anyone entering the workforce. This book should be part of the welcome kit for new college hires. The book is recommended for professionals who are taking on a new job or promotion, particularly one into the management ranks or senior management ranks where written communication is sometimes the only form of communication.

Strengths:

The book is clearly organized around the major elements and issues associated with business writing. It follows the writing process from organizing your ideas to writing the report and expressing your thoughts. This will give the reader the impression that writing is something you stop, think about, plan, then focus and write, which is how you write something worth reading.

The book is interactive in the sense that it follows up examples with little activities and questions that reinforce its ideas and concepts.

Frequent examples of good and not-so-good writing give the reader a clear idea of how to improve their writing. While these examples appear dated and somewhat more formal than most of our daily written communications, they do reinforce what good writing looks like.

Challenges:

The book concentrates on the mechanics of writing. This is good, but less so on the organization of the thought or idea you are writing about. Often poor writing is a reflection of incomplete thoughts, limited understanding, or a desire to avoid the issue. While the book's first section, planning a reader-friendly report, seeks to address this topic, it does so mechanically. This is an area where I have found Minto's the Pyramid Principle rather helpful.

The book covers digital issues to a degree, but this book remains grounded in the world of written and printed reports. Given that more of our communication is reading the written word on a screen, stored in a PDF, the book would have benefited from dealing with issues related to digitally delivered written communications. Those issues include: paragraph sizing, graphics, animation, titling, etc.

A Useful, Usable Manual for ALL Students of Writing

Never did I think that I'd read straight through a manual on writing a report--and enjoy the experience. Not only is what Carter Daniel says helpful, sensible, and insightful, but he says it concisely and wittily. The book may be directed toward business people, but all those students formerly doomed to English 101 should profit as well. It's a book my wife (Dorothy Schneider, a former professor of English) and I are delighted to own.

The No Bull Guide to Writing

This book is accessible, down-to-earth and utterly honest. Daniel shatters myth after myth and never hides behind weaselling textbook-speak. It's funny, hard-hitting and speaks to writers trying to please their sometimes unreasonable bosses. The details of format and grammar are practical and just as simple and straightforward.

Fascinating Biography. A MUST Read!

"American Ulysses" is a captivating and thorough biography of one of America's greatest and often forgotten heroes. As an amateur, Civil War historian, I appreciate the author's vivid detail and the historical accuracy of Grant's accomplishments during the war. Going beyond simple prose, the book is packed with informative maps, period pictures, and illustrations. However, for myself, the real treasure of this biography is found in the details of Grant's personal life, and the periods both before and directly after the Civil War.

Ronald C. White Jr. based this biography, in a large part, on all 33 volumes of "The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant". Even though I have read countless other Grant biographies, and Grant's own wonderful memoirs several times over, "American Ulysses" was full of surprises and new insights. Grant's relationship with his wife, Julia, and his entire family, is depicted in great detail. The author's in-depth treatment clearly reveals that Grant's marriage, family, and loyal friends were his anchor during the personal and professional challenges he weathered.

Mr. White's description of Grant's accomplishments (and frustrations) while serving under President Andrew Johnson was eye-opening. And both terms of Grant's presidency are given vivid, accurate, and (thankfully) unbiased detail. Likewise, the section on Grant's world tour was a treasure, and I found myself grateful that fate had finally given this untiring servant of the people a gift for himself.

Near the end of the book, there were tears in my eyes when reading about Grant's last day. Mr. White not only brought Ulysses alive for me, but, more than that, helped me to see him as if he was my own friend. For that, I am extremely grateful. Surely, however, the author's greatest accomplishment is that he has given present and future generations of historians and scholars the definitive tome on the life of Ulysses S. Grant. And for that, the world is extremely grateful.

An excellent biography on all scores - readable, detailed and epic

It's funny - in elementary school I remember learning that Robert E. Lee was the spit-and-polished military mastermind who simply ran out of men in his dignified leadership of the noble yet flawed Confederacy, while U.S. Grant was the grumpy idiot savant who smoked and drank and basically threw men at the problem until blundering into victory. And I went to school in Massachusetts!

While I've learned the real history since then, I probably had not learned it in such an in-depth way that Ronald White presents here.

This is of course a Grant-focused biography. Gettysburg gets a sentence or two, while the Vicksburg campaign gets a chapter - but that gives a deep look into aspects of the Civil War I barely knew or had long forgotten. White does a great job giving lots of details while never feeling overwhelming the reader.

White's narrative is totally readable and engaging. This is not a "dry and academic" history (not that there's anything wrong with that in proper setting) but an exciting and poignant and epic biography of an overlooked giant of American history. The "revisionist historians" of yesteryear marginalized Grant - because they were motivated to present a racist and white supremacist worldview - and a biography like this is a chance to revise it back.

In school, I had also "learned" that Grant was essentially an accidental president, put up by the era's powerbrokers as someone they successfully manipulated - again, not a true version of history. While Grant's presidential administration had it's share of scandals, both personal and professional, White gives enough context so they make sense in the 1870s standards of behavior. More importantly, Grant's consistent attempts at supporting the freedmen were often stymied by the Democratic politicians of the time (including the odious Andrew Johnson), and while he did his general best, the people of the US weren't up to it - the choices made in the 1870-90s represents our nation's darkest hour, and it's no wonder revisionists try to hide that era's evil.But Grant was always big, it's the country that was small.

Engaging and insightful. A great read.

It wasn't so long ago that in my junior high and high school history classes we learned about gallantry and genius of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson while Grant was almost an afterthought. We'd learn how Andrew Johnson had stood up to Radical Republicans to save the constitution. Then finally we'd read in our textbooks about how Grant's Presidency was in most ways a failure and ushered in the gilded age. It was interesting reading to me at the time but of course I eventually found out it was materially false account in many aspects. This book follows many other books over recent decades that help set the record straight and allows readers to appreciate Grant's rise from obscurity and failure to become a dynamic military and political leader. The author delves into Grant's campaigns in a manner that is engaging and insightful while demonstrating his military genius. The author also spends time outlining how Grant's principled actions he took as President, some he took without popular support, to ensure former slaves civil rights were protected and the union stabilised after the civil war and divisive, failed presidency of Andrew Johnson. The most interesting part if the book for me though was Grant's pre-civil war life. He came from humble beginnings to attend West Point and become an army officer only to resign in disgrace and fail as a farmer and businessman when he was almost 40. I find it interesting how much he grew in terms of his leadership abilities as a man approaching middle age. This book helped me gain a greater appreciation for Grant as a person and great American leader. I fully recommend this book to anyone who loves American history or reading about great historical figures.

This volume is one of several produced in conjunction with the 14-part PBS Eyes on the Prize television series. It is a collection of over 100 court decisions, speeches, interviews, and other documents on the civil rights movement from 1954 to 1990. Included in the collection are the Brown v. Board of Education decision of the Supreme Court that declared legally segregated schools to be unconstitutional, Martin Luther King's "Letter from Birmingham City Jail," Harold Washington's inaugural speech after being elected mayor of Chicago, and the speech delivered by Nelson Mandela in Atlanta in June 1990. The chapter introductions written by the editors are sometimes too brief to enable readers to fully appreciate the context and importance of the documents. Nonetheless, the volume is rich in primary source material on the civil rights movement. It can be a valuable reference work for public and university libraries.

A valued companion to the study of the Civil Rights Movement

I think that this book is a valued companion to Taylor Branch's epic work "Parting the Waters". Together, they make an unbeatable pair of study aids for one of America's most turbulent periods.
While P.T.W. is a more dispassionate third person chronicle, E.O.T.P. is more personally driven. It brings to life individuals like Bayard Rustin, Stokley Carmichael, John Lewis and other giants (known and obscure) of the movement. Events from the Till lynching to the Attica riots as seen through the eyes of those on the scene (sometimes, those making the scene).
Fascinating reading.

First Hand Documents Bring You There

When you get involved in studying political events and movements, ultimately there is going to be some disagreement on interpretations. While the Civil Righs Movement has suffered less revisionist history than many events of the last century, it is still valuable to go to the source documents and read about events in the words of those who participated in history or who made history. I agree that this book works well in tandem with another more narrative history, such as Eyes on the Prize, or Partin the Waters. But the compilers have done an excellent job of grouping by topics, with clear introductions putting the pieces that follow into proper place. I was surprised - I feared that this would be more dry of a read than it was. Instead I found myself pulled along, especially by some riveting first hand accounts of events such as the Attica riots. Another big plus for the book is that it brings the documents and the struggles into the 1980's, when first published. Many books ont he Civil Rights Movement cover until 1965, or 1968, this one keeps events in the 1970's and 80's relevant to what came before. I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to feel as if they were there for these struggles, and understand our history.

This is a great book to get get a background on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 60's. I read it when I began trying to learn about the CRM and some of the key players.
