"A RABBI FINDS HIS MESSIAH"? ACTUALLY, NO...

Michael Esses was, at the time this book was ghost-written for him by his former wife in 1973, "An extremely popular Old Testament teacher and scholar ... Dean of the Melodyland School of the Bible and Professor of Biblical Hebrew in the Melodyland School of Theology." He claimed to be a former rabbi, who converted to Christianity.

Unfortunately, his story was all a LIE---see his former wife's expose, Survivor of a Tarnished Ministry. But in the meantime, he fooled a lot of well-meaning Christians (including famous ones like Walter Martin, Ralph Wilkerson, and Pat Boone).

Nevertheless, for what it's worth, here are some quotations from the book:

"All Israelites are Jews, but not all Jews are Israelites. A Judean Jew is a Jew who is of the tribe of Judah. By oral tradition handed down from father to son in our family, even today we know who we are and what tribe we are from... We Judean Jews have always looked down our noses at our fellow brethren of the people of Israel. We felt we were the aristocrats of the Hebrew people." (Pg. 10-11)
"When I look back at my childhood, it is very painful to me, even now that I am a man. Unconsciously, we all think that a child should be at least reasonably happy, but searching through my memory as hard as I can, I can't come up with even one happy moment." (Pg. 23)
"I take authority granted unto me by the Lord Jesus Christ. I hear myself saying, with a boldness that I don't possess, 'In the name of Jesus Christ, Irvine, I command your spirit to come back to your body.' ... Understanding how to trust and believe

I read this book with interest and an appetite to learn about a Jew who fought to convince his Christian wife that he had converted. Being a Christian, I thought it would be completely different. I expected it to be a story where a Jew was missing something in his life and found that conversion to Christianity was the answer. It made sense to me. But as I read, I realized that it is a lot to ask a person of the Jewish faith to simply accept that Jesus was the Son of God and our Redeemer. I do love the way that Michael uses his education in languages and his knowledge of the Bible to fool people and convince them that he has converted. It is amusing and ironic how he can do this and yet learn that God is always there waiting and His Son will always be willing to take on your sins and pay for them. He goes a long way to fight it and in the process learns to trust and to believe in this new to him faith. It is a well written easy read and I think you will enjoy folling Michael Esses through this journey.

This is a story that will edify many Christians. And it's got an easy-to-read style.

There's only one thing wrong with it. Much of it is just not true.

Anyone with a bit of knowledge of Jewish life, and some common sense, can spot the more obvious of the falsehoods.

So, fascinating as an example of a hoax, but avoid it if you're looking for spiritual food.

John Rewald, the internationally acclaimed Cezanne scholar, presents here for the first time a full account of how the artist's reputation and influence became established in America between 1891 and 1921, and of how some of the world's largest collections of Cezanne's works were formed in the United States. Recounted in Rewald's characteristically urbane and masterly style, this is the fascinating story of enthusiastic young American artists who took up Cezanne's cause after they discovered him in Paris. It is also the story of the discerning early American collectors of his work--Leo and Gertrude Stein, the Havemeyers and John Quinn, among others--many of whom made their first purchases from Cezanne's wily dealer Vollard or from the dealer Alfred Stieglitz in America, and of the beginning of the famous collection of Dr. Albert C. Barnes.

Rewald discusses the exhibitions at which Cezanne's works were first shown and describes the outraged reactions of all but a few of the American critics. Several chapters are devoted to the important Armory Show of 1913. Throughout the text runs a compelling narrative in which all the actors revolve around the absent protagonist Cezanne. Each chapter is copiously illustrated, not only with Cezanne's works but also with portraits of collectors and critics and with previously unpublished pages from diaries, dealers' ledgers, and Cezanne's own correspondence.

This unique, painstaking study of the reception of Cezanne's work in America tells how a few enlightened American artists, critics, and collectors helped to establish Cezanne's reputation as the father of modern art. Some of Cezanne's first collectors were American--e.g., Berenson, Loeser, Fabbri, Havemeyer, and Leo Stein--and after his death, a number of American artists discovered his work. Walter Pach's favorable writings helped lead to Steiglitz's exhibition of Cezanne watercolors at his "291" gallery. Following the 1913 Armory Show, wider recognition of his contribution to modern art slowly grew in this country to culminate in his inclusion in the 1921 exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A fascinating, highly readable, yet scholarly book culled primarily from reviews and letters. Essential for all art collections.

About the Author

Jonathan Pevsner, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at Kennedy Krieger Institute, an internationally recognized institution dedicated to improving the lives of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. He holds a primary faculty appointment as Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine). He holds joint or secondary appointments in the Department of Neuroscience, the Institute of Genetic Medicine, and the Division of Health Sciences Informatics (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), and the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health). He has taught bioinformatics courses since 2000 at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and was awarded Teacher of the Year honors by the Graduate Student Association in both 2001 and 2006, the Professors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching awarded by the medical faculty (2003), Teacher of the Year (Advanced Academic Programs, 2009), and Teaching Excellence Award in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2011). In 2013 his lab used whole genome sequencing and reported a mutation that causes a rare disease, Sturge-Weber syndrome, as well as a commonly occurring port-wine stain birthmark.

The format of the book is almost unreadable in the kindle edition. In addition, there are no page numbers. If you are trying to following along in class, good luck.
