Make Me: A Jack Reacher Novel, by Lee Child

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LOS ANGELES TIMES, THE GUARDIAN, AND SUSPENSE MAGAZINE • Stephen King calls Jack Reacher “the coolest continuing series character”—and now he’s back in this masterly new thriller from Lee Child.

“Why is this town called Mother’s Rest?” That’s all Reacher wants to know. But no one will tell him. It’s a tiny place hidden in a thousand square miles of wheat fields, with a railroad stop, and sullen and watchful people, and a worried woman named Michelle Chang, who mistakes him for someone else: her missing partner in a private investigation she thinks must have started small and then turned lethal.

Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there, and there’s something about Chang . . . so he teams up with her and starts to ask around. He thinks: How bad can this thing be? But before long he’s plunged into a desperate race through LA, Chicago, Phoenix, and San Francisco, and through the hidden parts of the internet, up against thugs and assassins every step of the way—right back to where he started, in Mother’s Rest, where he must confront the worst nightmare he could imagine.

Walking away would have been easier. But as always, Reacher’s rule is: If you want me to stop, you’re going to have to make me.

Praise for Make Me

“Child’s Reacher series has hit Book No. 20 with a resounding peal of wisecracking glee. Everything about it, starting with Reacher’s nose for bad news, is as strong as ever. . . . The big guy’s definitely on the upswing. The guy who writes about him is too.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Another winner . . . There’s a reason why Child is considered the best of the best in the thriller genre: He can take all these strange elements and clichés and make them compelling and original.”—Associated Press

“A superb thriller.”—New York Daily News

“Child’s complete command of the story makes this thriller work brilliantly.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“I’ve read all twenty of Lee Child’s novels. Maybe there’s something wrong with me. But I can’t wait for the twenty-first.”—Malcolm Gladwell, The New Yorker

“[The Reacher series] is the current gold standard in the genre. . . . In Make Me Lee Child delivers another Jack Reacher specialty; the total knockout.”—Dayton Daily News

“Child serves up wingding plots, pithy dialogue, extraordinary background on intriguing topics, and cunningly constructed suspense. But what keeps us coming back—by the millions—is the chance to walk around in the skin of that big guy in the middle of everything.”—The Oregonian

“A dark thriller . . . Lee Child’s Make Me, the twentieth in his wildly popular Jack Reacher series, delivers exactly what readers have come to expect from the perennial bestselling author: interesting characters, tight plots and page-turning action. . . . Readers won’t be disappointed.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Jack Reacher is back. . . . Readers new to this series will find this book a good starting point, and fans will be pleased to see Jack again.”—LibraryReads (Top Ten Pick)

“The reigning champ ups the ante.”—Booklist (starred review)

“This series remains as compulsively readable as ever. Child is a master of pacing, stretching out the mystery through short chapters that give rise to bursts of well-choreographed violence. . . . Of course, the biggest strength is Reacher himself: impassive, analytical, secretly romantic, and relentlessly honorable. It’s impossible not to root for him. . . . Reacher is still going strong. Will satisfy fans—and newcomers, too.”—Kirkus Reviews

Chapter 1

Moving a guy as big as Keever wasn’t easy. It was like trying to wrestle a king-size mattress off a waterbed. So they buried him close to the house. Which made sense anyway. The harvest was still a month away, and a disturbance in a field would show up from the air. And they would use the air, for a guy like Keever. They would use search planes, and helicopters, and maybe even drones.

They started at midnight, which they thought was safe enough. They were in the middle of ten thousand acres of nothingness, and the only man-made structure their side of any horizon was the railroad track to the east, but midnight was five hours after the evening train and seven hours before the morning train. Therefore, no prying eyes. Their backhoe had four spotlights on a bar above the cab, the same way kids pimped their pick-up trucks, and together the four beams made a wide pool of halogen brightness. Therefore, visibility was not a problem either. They started the hole in the hog pen, which was a permanent disturbance all by itself. Each hog weighed two hundred pounds, and each hog had four feet. The dirt was always chewed up. Nothing to see from the air, not even with a thermal camera. The picture would white out instantly, from the steaming animals themselves, and their steaming piles and pools of waste.

Safe enough.

Hogs were rooting animals, so they made sure the hole was deep. Which was not a problem either. Their backhoe’s arm was long, and it bit rhythmically, in fluent articulated seven-foot scoops, the hydraulic rams glinting in the electric light, the engine straining and roaring and pausing, the cab falling and rising, as each bucket-load was dumped aside. When the hole was done they backed the machine up and turned it around and used the front bucket to push Keever into his grave, scraping him, rolling him, covering his body with dirt, until finally it fell over the lip and thumped down into the electric shadows.

Only one thing went wrong, and it happened right then.

The evening train came through five hours late. The next morning they heard on the AM station that a broken locomotive had caused a jam a hundred miles south. But they didn’t know that at the time. All they heard was the mournful whistle at the distant crossing, and then all they could do was turn and stare, at the long lit cars rumbling past in the middle distance, one after the other, like a vision in a dream, seemingly forever. But eventually the train was gone, and the rails sang for a minute more, and then the tail light was swallowed by the midnight darkness, and they turned back to their task.

Twenty miles north the train slowed, and slowed, and then eased to a hissing stop, and the doors sucked open, and Jack Reacher stepped down to a concrete ramp in front of a grain elevator as big as an apartment house. To his left were four more elevators, all of them bigger than the first, and to his right was an enormous metal shed the size of an airplane hangar. There were vapor lights on poles, set at regular intervals, and they cut cones of yellow in the darkness. There was mist in the nighttime air, like a note on a calendar. The end of summer was coming. Fall was on its way.

Reacher stood still and behind him the train moved away without him, straining, grinding, settling to a slow rat-a-tat rhythm, and then accelerating, its building slipstream pulling at his clothes. He was the only passenger who had gotten out. Which was not surprising. The place was no kind of a commuter hub. It was all agricultural. What token passenger facilities it had were wedged between the last elevator and the huge shed, and were limited to a compact building, which seemed to have both a ticket window and benches for waiting. It was built in a traditional railroad style, and it looked like a child’s toy, temporarily set down between two shiny oil drums.

But on a sign board running its whole length was written the reason Reacher was there: Mother’s Rest. Which he had seen on a map, and which he thought was a great name for a railroad stop. He figured the line must cross an ancient wagon train trail, right there, where something had happened long ago. Maybe a young pregnant woman went into labor. The jostling could not have helped. Maybe the wagon train stopped for a couple of weeks. Or a month. Maybe someone remembered the place years later. A descendant, perhaps. A family legend. Maybe there was a one-room museum.

Or perhaps there was a sadder interpretation. Maybe they had buried a woman there. Too old to make it. In which case there would be a commemorative stone.

Either way Reacher figured he might as well find out. He had no place to go, and all the time in the world to get there, so detours cost him nothing. Which is why he got out of the train. To a sense of disappointment, initially. His expectations had been way off base. He had pictured a couple of dusty houses, and a lonely one-horse corral. And the one-room museum, maybe run part-time and volunteer by an old guy from one of the houses. Or the headstone, maybe marble, behind a square wrought-iron fence.

He had not expected the immense agricultural infrastructure. He should have, he supposed. Grain, meet the railroad. It had to be loaded somewhere. Billions of bushels and millions of tons each year. He stepped left and looked through a gap between structures. The view was dark, but he could sense a rough semicircle of habitation. Houses, obviously, for the depot workers. He could see lights, which he hoped were a motel, or a diner, or both.

He walked to the exit, skirting the pools of vapor light purely out of habit, but he saw that the last lamp was unavoidable, because it was set directly above the exit gate. So he saved himself a further perimeter diversion by walking through the next-to-last pool of light, too.

At which point a woman stepped out of the shadows.

She came toward him with a distinctive burst of energy, two fast paces, eager, like she was pleased to see him. Her body language was all about relief.

Then it wasn’t. Then it was all about disappointment. She stopped dead, and she said, “Oh.”

She was Asian. But not petite. Five-nine, maybe, or even five- ten. And built to match. Not a bone in sight. No kind of a willowy waif. She was about forty, Reacher guessed, with black hair worn long, jeans and a T-shirt under a short cotton coat. She had lace-up shoes on her feet.

He said, “Good evening, ma’am.”

She was looking past his shoulder.

He said, “I’m the only passenger.”

She looked him in the eye.

He said, “No one else got out of the train. So I guess your friend isn’t coming.”

“My friend?” she said. A neutral kind of accent. Regular American. The kind he heard everywhere.

He said, “Why else would a person be here, except to meet the train? No point in coming otherwise. I guess normally there would be nothing to see at midnight.”

She didn’t answer.

He said, “Don’t tell me you’ve been waiting here since seven o’clock.”

“I didn’t know the train was late,” she said. “There’s no cell signal here. And no one from the railroad, to tell you anything. And I guess the Pony Express is out sick today.”

“He wasn’t in my car. Or the next two, either.”

“Who wasn’t?”

“Your friend.”

“You don’t know what he looks like.”

“He’s a big guy,” Reacher said. “That’s why you jumped out when you saw me. You thought I was him. For a second, anyway. And there were no big guys in my car. Or the next two.”

“When is the next train?”

“Seven in the morning.”

She said, “Who are you and why have you come here?”

“I’m just a guy passing through.”

“The train passed through. Not you. You got out.”

“You know anything about this place?”

“Not a thing.”

“Have you seen a museum or a gravestone?”

“Why are you here?”

“Who’s asking?”

She paused a beat, and said, “Nobody.”

Reacher said, “Is there a motel in town?”

“I’m staying there.”

“How is it?”

“It’s a motel.”

“Works for me,” Reacher said. “Does it have vacancies?”

“I’d be amazed if it didn’t.”

“OK, you can show me the way. Don’t wait here all night. I’ll be up by first light. I’ll knock on your door as I leave. Hopefully your friend will be here in the morning.”

The woman said nothing. She just glanced at the silent rails one more time, and then turned around and led the way through the exit gate.

The darkest Reacher yet
By Julia Flyte
My life is pretty much like this: I spend 11 months and 28 days of every year looking forward to the new Lee Child book and then 2-3 days devouring it. He is the master of the opening paragraph. Immediate hooks. Short sentences. You don't even notice his writing style after the first page or two but it's effortless to read. And there are many things about this book which make it a strong addition to the series. I read it in two days and it definitely gave me the "Reacher fix" I wanted.

It starts in the usual way with Reacher turning up in a small town and immediately running into a woman in need of assistance (in this case Michelle Chang, a former FBI agent turned private investigator who is looking for her missing colleague), but it turns into a cross-country investigation that touches on issues that are current and very nasty.

And that is one of the issues that I had with the book: it's dark. It goes places that are unpleasant and disturbing. The majority of the book is like a regular Jack Reacher novel, but it changes tone towards the end when it becomes evident what it is that Reacher and Chang are investigating. The villains in this instance aren't just bad guys - they are evil. And I can honestly say that this is one Lee Child book I will never re-read. I didn't like putting those images in my head.

Another thing. It struck me halfway through this book that every woman that Reacher teams up with is exactly the same. Even as I write that it occurs to me that Lee Child would probably protest that it's not true because Chang is in her 40s and Chinese American, but that kind of proves my point: only the superficialities change. The banter - and yes, sexual chemistry - between Reacher and Chang is indistinguishable between what he had with Susan Turner or Elizabeth Deveraux or Theresa Lee or Susan Duffy or...you get the picture. There is nothing distinctive about Chang whatsoever.

So not the best Lee Child book - far from it - but it's hard in this genre to maintain a consistently high standard and when you compare him to his contemporaries he still does a better job of it than most.

No more "new" Reachers; I will start over from the beginning.
By Billy Boy
With Make Me I've reached the limit of my patience and frustration with Mr. Childs. There were a few spurts of the old Reacher here but the story is sick and drags endlessly through a tiresome search for a character. Too much unnecessary filler material that I skimmed through. On a scale of A to E I gave this one a D, the first time for a Reacher. So I will be starting from the first Reacher because he used to be great.

AWFUL
By Kindle
Awful. I don't think Lee Child wrote this. The REAL Jack Reacher would never give us page after page after page of how the internet works. He wouldn't care. Then we have paragraphs of his mental pros and cons discussion with himself and philosophical wanderings. Not the REAL Jack. Then he hits on his partner and then asks her to go to Milwaukee with him. NO NO not the REAL Jack. He would have gone on the train and not looked back. Please give us the REAL Jack or stop putting this Inter for Dummies and Psyc 101 drivel.

Book needs updating
By Cate
The third edition, copyright 2006, often seems outdated. The examples and references are usually from the 1980's or 1990's. The authors provided a new edition, but I don't see that much effort went into actually updating the material. They don't even introduce object oriented approaches until the last chapter of the book. It's almost like it's an afterthought. They also don't provide much information on RAD or agile methods.

I feel like I bought a circa 1999 book. Disappointing.

Highly Recommended
By Erric Budiono
Price reflects quality. This book is superb for System Analyst and Designers (SAD), both beginner and advanced ones. It is very informative that can be used for both learning and reference purposes. The authors explain everything very clearly using the same case examples (CD Selection case) and exercises for every chapter, so it's very easy to understand and keep track as you move chapter by chapter. I used to screw up in SAD but as I started using this book, I learned much more and much better than before. Thanks to the authors for thier good job and my professor who recommended this book to the class. Highly recommended for anyone interested in SAD.

A Great and Concise Introduction to SDLC
By A Customer
I was introducted to this book as a student of DeVry Institute of Technology. I think the book provides the most concise, yet informative theory of the System Development Life Cycle. Those interested in project management, infrastructure management, etc. would find this book extremely concise and "to-the-point". The book also provides an array of examples, including case projects and questions. I think the only thing missing from this book is an interactive CD or software such as Microsoft Project or Visible Analyst. But we know how Microsoft is about licensing and purchase standards. Anyway, the book is an excellent resource for those interested in information systems management.

Performance Tuning with SQL Server Dynamic Management Views (High Performance SQL Server), by Louis Davidson, Tim Ford

Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) are a significant and valuable addition to the DBA's troubleshooting armory, laying bare previously unavailable information regarding the under-the-covers activity of your database sessions and transactions. Why, then, aren't all DBAs using them? Why do many DBAs continue to ignore them in favour of "tried and trusted" tools such as sp_who2, DBCC OPENTRAN, and so on, or make do with the "ready made" reports built into SSMS? Why do even those that do use the DMVs speak wistfully about "good old sysprocesses"? There seem to be two main factors at work. Firstly, some DBAs are simply unaware of the depth and breadth of the information that is available from the DMvs, or how it might help them troubleshoot common issues. This book investigates all of the DMVs that are most frequently useful to the DBA in investigating query execution, index usage, session and transaction activity, disk IO, and how SQL Server is using or abusing the operating system. Secondly, the DMVs have a reputation of being difficult to use. In the process of exposing as much useful data as possible, sysprocesses has been de-normalized, and many new views and columns have been added. This fact, coupled with the initially-baffling choices of what columns will be exposed where, has lead to some DBAs to liken querying DMVs to "collecting mystic spells". In fact, however, once you start to write your own scripts, you'll see the same tricks, and similar join patterns, being used time and again. As such, a relatively small core set of scripts can be readily adapted to suit any requirement. This book is here to de-mystify the process of collecting the information you need to troubleshoot SQL Server problems. It will highlight the core techniques and "patterns" that you need to master, and will provide a core set of scripts that you can use and adapt for your own systems, including how to: * Root out the queries that are causing memory or CPU pressure on your system * Investigate caching, and query plan reuse * Identify index usage patterns * Track fragmentation in clustered indexes and heaps * Get full details on blocking and blocked transactions, including the exact commands being executed, and by whom. * Find out where SQL Server is spending time waiting for resources to be released, before proceeding * Monitor usage and growth of tempdb The DMVs don't make existing, built-in, performance tools obsolete. On the contrary, they complement these tools, and offer a flexibility, richness and granularity that are simply not available elsewhere. Furthermore, you don't need to master a new GUI, or a new language in order to use them; it's all done in a language all DBAs know and mostly love: T-SQL.

A Necessary and Important Reference Manual
By Grant Fritchey
You know those technical manuals that sit on your desk, slowly collecting little post-it tabs with notes on them, the spines are cracked, the covers are wrinkled, when people come to borrow them you snatch it from their hands? You know those books? Yeah, well, this is one of them. I've only owned it for a few days, but I've already opened it several times to look stuff up, even stuff I had just finished reading.

I really like the approach the authors, Louis Davidson & Tim Ford, took to the book. Instead of just laying out a bunch of Dynamic Management Objects (DMO) in alphabetical order or something, they focused on the DMOs associated with Performance Tuning. Then, they took the trouble to break the DMOs apart into different areas of data and performance metrics like "Query Plan MetaData" and "Transactions." They introduced each topic with an overview of the topic, why DMOs are useful to gathering data on that topic and then dived into which DMO did what to help you with the information you need to do performance tuning on your system.

The writing is very clear and to the point. Also, I wasn't able to detect different "voices" as I read through the book. Despite more than one author, there's not that disjointed feeling you can get as you hop from one chapter to another and switch authors at the same time. I really liked the sample queries and the way they built on each other, showing you the true strength available in DMOs, which is combining them to put together extremely useful views on the data in the system. I also liked the fonts used and the layout of the book, the way important code was called out through bolding & font changes. I did think that the screen captures were a bit fuzzy, but not to the degree that it detracted from the book in any way.

The argument can be made that books like this just rewrite the Books Online (BOL). But, in addition to extremely clear explanations, and a focused methodology showing you not just how to use the DMOs but where and why to use the DMOs, you also get the unique code samples. The thing about DMOs is that in isolation, they're useful. But it's in combination that they become powerful. The examples emphasize how these building blocks can be put together to create new, interesting and useful reports. Examples such as these are just not available in BOL.

For all these reasons, I highly recommend this book. If you're responsible for maintaining or developing SQL Server systems, you'll find something useful in this book that you can put to work, right away.

It's like reading two useful books at once
By Noel McKinney
Reading this was like absorbing the knowledge of two books at the same time, with one book on performance tuning and the other on dynamic management objects. I bought this book primary to learn more about dynamic management objects, but was surprised by the high coverage of performance tuning in general (and not just as pertains to dynamic management objects). The focus is still on use of dynamic management objects, but you can learn much about the goals of performance tuning from this book.

Performance Tuning with SQL Server Dynamic Management Views is not a beginner level book, and it assumes knowledge of SQL Server and RDBMS technologies. Along the way there are recommendations for online articles to read for more in-depth information, or for background coverage of concepts that you may not have seen in a while and need to review. Unlike some technical books on SQL Server, this is not a regurgitation of SQL Server Books Online, however it does point you there for more information when appropriate.

This book works in layers, so that you have a structure to approaching performance tuning by starting at an outer layer and working toward inner layers as the book progresses. Topics to be measured by dynamic management views (eg. transactions, latches) are briefly discussed as encountered. Rather than just blindly querying dynamic management views, the authors describe how to filter and display results in a useful manner. They also discuss pitfalls to avoid when using dynamic management objects... for example, they will mention if a particular dynamic management view may be resource intensive, things to do so that joins on dynamic management views are properly constructed, etc.

The authors do not consider dynamic management objects in isolation. They make comparisons to alternative measurement methods and tool, and discuss advantages of dynamic management objects to consider (for example, the system impacts of measurement methods, available levels of granularity). They also discuss when other tools might be appropriate, or how other tools and dynamic management objects might be used together to address performance issues.

This book describes the naming of dynamic management objects, and clarifies these names so that you can begin to get a feel for what a dynamic management object does based on the structure of its name. It also compares dynamic management objects among each other to avoid confusion... this is appreciated because a lot of the names can begin to look similar after a while. Dynamic management objects are also compared and contrasted to older SQL Server compatibility views. This way, you know where to go for information you were accustomed to getting from those older views. Along these same lines, the book discusses name changes of columns that are available in dynamic management objects but with a different name than was used in compatibility views.

The book is full of good examples, and many of these set up scenarios in a database so that you can observe the resulting issues using dynamic management objects. Code examples in the book are available for download online (link for this is provided early in the book). Performance Tuning with SQL Server Dynamic Management Views is dense with information and hard to put down once you open it. It will be nearby with my other technical reference books, and I'm sure I'll be referring to it often in the coming years.

The Devilish DMOs Have Been Demystified
By Sean S.
The biggest pain of Dynamic Management Views/Objects is that they often aren't that well documented, and you spend too much time figuring out which ones to use to diagnose which problems. This book helped to bridge that divide. It breaks it down by problem type, so you know which views to use, and which ones complement each other. Now it doesn't give you a start to finish methodology to say start with A, then go to B, then go to C. So it assumes you have some level of troubleshooting skills and familiarity with SQL Server performance. But if you have a good idea of where to start, then this book gives some solid examples of how to go down the rabbit hole and confirm your suspicions and get to the root cause. Because, in the end, that's what we want. It also gave some ideas on how to resolve those problems, but a good deal of that is going to be up to you. Chances are though, if you can find the problem, and you're an experienced DBA or developer, then you already have a pretty good idea of how to resolve it.

Goliath, by Tom Gauld

A master of stripped-down, powerful storytelling reworks the David-and-Goliath myth
"Gauld's Goliath is a master class in reduction...a celebration of the Christian underdog becomes a subtle meditation on the power of spin and the absurdity of war."–The Times of London

Goliath of Gath isn't much of a fighter. Given half a choice, he would pick admin work over patrolling in a heartbeat, to say nothing of his distaste for engaging in combat. Nonetheless, at the behest of the king, he finds himself issuing a twice-daily challenge to the Israelites: "Choose a man. Let him come to me that we may fight. If he be able to kill me then we shall be your servants. But if I kill him, then you shall be our servants." Day after day he reluctantly repeats his speech, and the isolation of this duty gives him the chance to banter with his shield-bearer and reflect on the beauty of his surroundings.

This is the story of David and Goliath as seen from Goliath's side of the Valley of Elah. Quiet moments in Goliath's life as a soldier are accentuated by Tom Gauld's drawing style, which contrasts minimalist scenery and near-geometric humans with densely crosshatched detail reminiscent of Edward Gorey. Goliath's battle is simultaneously tragic and bleakly funny, as bureaucracy pervades even this most mythic of figures. Goliath displays a sensitive wit, a bold line, and a traditional narrative reworked, remade, and revolutionized.

Review

“In [Gauld's] version, Goliath is no bloodthirsty caricature, but a crack penpusher for the Philistine army who is forced into facing down the Israelite army by an unscrupulous superior. Stranded on the frontline with his young shield bearer for company, the main part of the story is about loneliness and losing control of your own destiny, with the muted brown palette reflecting the bleak situation Goliath inexplicably finds himself in.” ―It's Nice That on Goliath

“Gauld’s stylistic toolkit―clean lines, simple shapes, and crosshatching so thick it’s nearly fabric―makes it all a pleasure to behold. He mines comedic gold from deadpan reaction shots so well timed you could set a watch by them and, weirder still, some tragic oomph for the hapless sucker.” ―Booklist on Goliath

“Satan, as we know, has had all the best tunes and much of the best literature since Milton's Paradise Lost (1666). [Goliath is] a graphic novel by the acclaimed cartoonist Tom Gauld, the story of David and Goliath as seen from Goliath's side of the Valley of Elah.” ―The Independent on Goliath

“Tom Gauld's tragic, darkly funny retelling of David and Goliath from Goliath's perspective. Gauld's work is always quietly powerful and emotionally grabbing.” ―Boing Boing on Goliath

Wonderful retelling of a well known story
By Jessica
Goliath is a graphic novel of the story of David and Goliath, told from Goliath's point of view. I loved it, and I loved sharing it with my children (ages 10 and 12).

This is a sturdy book, with drawings and type that feel like a bit of a throwback to my untutored eye. Stylistically, especially in the sparse landscapes, I'm reminded of Edward Gorey, whose work I know mostly from watching Mystery! on PBS as a child. Gauld's work has the same "cross hatch" style, which makes simple drawings seem quite complex. Goliath is done in three colors: black, white, and brown. The landscape, with boulders, hills, and a few scraggly leafless trees, is quite barren.

The focus of Goliath is not on action, and indeed, there is almost no action until the final frames. It's the character of Goliath, the novelty of getting the giant's back story, and the questions it raises about point of view and truth, that propel the book. I was very impressed with Gauld's ability to convey so much story through minimal text and stripped down illustrations.

That said, despite the somber tone, there are moments of wry humor in Goliath, especially in the bureaucratic muddle that is the Philistine army, and in Goliath's relationship with his shield-bearer, an eager, naive boy whose pointed questions reveal the absurdity of Goliath's situation. My one criticism of the book would be that on one or two occasions the humor veers into "cutesy" territory.

You have to watch for the small things in Goliath. In the opening pages, Goliath has gone down to the river for a drink. He absentmindedly picks up a rock. He looks at it, and lets it go. The "plop" it makes as it reenters the river is barely noticed by Goliath, but it's a strong dose of foreshadowing for the reader. Also notice how the type changes when scripture is quoted. The seemingly simple type and text are jarring against the force of the powerful, epic narrative most readers will know very well.

This is a bleak book: a lot of waiting, for no apparent reason, then death. I was glad Gauld didn't pull his punches: David walking off with Goliath's head is the last image. It's not gory, but it's very powerful. Goliath isn't too sure what he's waiting for or why. If you didn't know the story, nothing in Goliath would clue you in as to why there is a battle in the first place. As Darth Vader would put it, the existential themes are strong in this one.

I also like the questions the book raises about point of view and truth. Goliath sure does look bad from the point of view to which those versed in the Jewish, Muslim, or Christian traditions are accustomed (there's even a Greek version): a bloodthirty, taunting giant (he calls the Israelites during their time of prayer), with super duper armor and a terrifying bronze spear and sword. Pit him against David, practically a child, with no armor, and a few rocks, and you have the makings of a huge upset victory. As a Jew, I read the story as revealing David's fitness to be king, and, more generally, as imparting a multitude of other lessons about hubris before God, etc. In our tradition, Goliath, once struck by David's rock, falls forward on his face, and rabbis throughout the ages have claimed this shows how right David was, that God didn't even make him walk too far to cut off Goliath's head. In Gauld's version, the dead Goliath is on his back. In my reading, this reinforces the theme we shouldn't be too sure about our own rightness, about our differences from those we deem wrong, or about the "one true version" of any story.

Making An Enigmatic Character More Human
By Robert Kristoffersen
What do we know about Goliath of Gath? Not that much if you'd asked Scottish cartoonist Tom Gauld, and with his new graphic novel, Goliath, from Drawn & Quarterly, he attempts to expand a bit on the story of this giant. Those familiar with the Bible story of Goliath will know him as a ruthless pagan, hell bent on blood, conquer, and challenging one to meet him on the battle field. Well we all know how that story ended, but Gauld isn't satisfied, and in this graphic novel he goes on a quest to explore the more human side of the giant who fell by stone.

The first task Gauld sets to is stripping away the religious aspect of the story. The only mentions of it are quotations from the Bible that set up certain portions in the story. As this epic opens, we're introduced to our giant; more gentle than menace, Goliath spends his day doing administrative paper work and hardly seems the warrior type. In fact, as the story opens, Goliath is changing shifts so that he can do more paperwork.

Soon, Goliath finds himself at the center of ending the conflict between the Philistines and Israel. He's measured for armor, given a shield bearer, and sent on a quest to challenge one Israeli warrior, brave enough to take him on. He announces himself day by day, the reluctant warrior even considers abandoning his post at one point, until that fateful day when his opponent shows up and ends it in one fell swoop.

Gauld's interpretation of history's most ruthless giant is heartbreaking and sympathetic, and in doing so restores Goliath to a more human status. He also slaps scripture in the face by having him fall backwards as he dies (In the Bible he falls forward, making for some dispute.). But it's the human aspect of Goliath's demise that really makes this story engaging; a misunderstood man a midst those that seek to use him for purposes that are unbecoming of him and that ultimately cost him his life. Grab a hanky, you'll be in for some water works.

Was hoping for a lot more
By rambseigh
Tom Gauld's single panel comics are as fantastic as this book is mediocre. He seems to be playing with a Christopher Ware type of storytelling, where the panels aren't a slave to the plot, but are convey other aspects of the story in a more meaningful way. The problem is Ware's panels always feel purposeful, whereas too many of Gauld's feel arbitrary or redundant. Probably, why Gauld can't pull off the effect he's going for is that his story and characters are way too thin. I really wish Gauld had spent more time fleshing out the story. His comics are great because he can find the absurdity in our chaotic, modern lives. Starting with such a simple story, that isn't complex, let alone chaotic, gives Gauld nothing to aim for. He is a David without a Goliath.

Review
''No publisher chronicles the history of electric guitars better than Backbeat Books. Once again, they have created a book both informative to read and delightful to look at. If you've ever wondered why PRS guitars are so special, read this and you'll understand the reasons.'' --Curled Up with a Good Book

''The highlight of the book, for me, is the focus on the use of dragon imagery on the body of the guitars and inlays in the neck; the red Dragon 2000 has to be seen to be believed (only fifty were made) and the high res photographs on the high gloss paper used in the book does it proud.'' --Fireworks magazine Issue 70

Somewhat disappointing!
By PRS Enthusiast
Glad to finally see an update on PRS Guitars, but found the book somewhat disappointingly. There were no pictures of several important recent models: 2009 Paul's Dirty 100, 2010 MC-58 McCarty and the 2011 53/10 Limited, etc. The 2011 53/10 Limited was not even mentioned. Also their great line of amplifiers was not highlighted at all. These are some of the best hand-wired and beautiful amplifiers on the market. This was unbelievable for an update that people have waited seven years. And don't discard your previous PRS Books. The 2007 updated edition features a larger format (larger pictures).

I love PRS guitars and this book is a great intro into the world of Paul Reed Smith. I would have liked to see more photos of "famous" PRS players and what models they used but all in all I really liked this book.

Very nice book with lots of pics. A good reference for PRS history. The only letdown is the cover says it includes 30th anniversary models and I'm still searching that in the pages.

For Tom Brennan, life is about rubgy, mates and family - until a night of celebration changes his life forever. In a drunken rage, Tom's older brother, Daniel, causes a car accident in which their cousin, Fin, suffers irreversible spinal injuries and two friends are killed.
Tom's world explodes as Daniel is sent to jail and the Brennans' are forced to leave the small town Tom's lived his whole life. But how can Tom even begin to rebuild his life when his Mother won't get out of bed, his Father is struggling to hold the family together, and Tom has to play rugby without his beloved team - and without Daniel.

I found that "The Story of Tom Brennan" is a beautifully written masterpiece about how one mistake can impact on so many lives. We take Tom's journey with him as he struggles to accept the changes in his life and understand that it wasn't his fault what happened.
This novel far surpasses many in its genre and is a really insightful book on the way all choices have some form of consequence.
