A great book, by a great scholar

A French scholar in Middle Eastern studies, I had the pleasure to discover the incredible talent of Prof. Bernard Rougier as soon as in 2004, when he first published "Le Jihad au quotidien" ("Everyday Jihad" in English, published with Harvard University Press). I was amazed then by the quality of his fieldwork, of his analysis and the relevance of his conclusions for a deep, solid understanding of Sunni jihadism in the Levant. Rougier, a perfect arabic-speaking scholar who got his PhD in political science at the very prestigious university of Sciences Po in Paris, had spent years in Lebanon in Palestinian camps, courageously interviewing jihadists that no other person of the profession would ever dare to approach.

When I heard Rougier published a second book a few years later, I was enthusiastic and skeptical at the same time. Would he be able to do as well as with the first book? I have to admit it. He did even better. "The Sunni Tragedy" shall remain Rougier's life masterpiece. No wonder the great John Waterbury wrote such an enthusiastic review of the book in Foreign Affairs. A thorough and complete presentation of the whole Sunni jihadist networks spreading from northern Lebanon to the rest of the region, a clever modelization of the pillars of contemporary jihadism, the book shows clearly that Rougier remains the one and only real expert of the various groups involved, the reference anyone interested in the subject cannot do without.

Cousteau's The Living Sea - GREAT!

This is, literally, one of the best books I've ever read. Beautifully written, full of adventure and information. Takes you back to the early days of the Calypso, and details the invention of underwater photography, archaeology, oil prospecting, bathyscaphe diving... the goodies just keep coming. A great world tour of the oceans both above and below, told through the words of oceanographers who are as much poets as scientists.

About the Author
JANET BEER is Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of Humanities, Law and Social Science at the Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. Her other publications include Special Relationships: Anglo-American Affinities and Antagonisms, 1854-1936 (co-edited with Bridget Bennett, 2002), American Feminism: Key Source Documents,1848-1920 (editor, 2002), and Edith Wharton (2001).

Could have been great!

I am teaching an advanced pathophysiology course and looking for supplemental texts to help students. This does a nice job explaining certain disease processes including epidemiology, pathophysiology, patient presentations, and management. It does not go into extreme depth, but does offer the student a nice solid understanding of the disease. The problem is there are so few diseases discussed in this text. For example, the only disease discussed in the endocrine system is type 2 diabetes! This could have been a great text, but as is it only serves as a minor supplement to other more thorough texts available. Bottom line, I like the spoonful of material I got, but now I want the whole meal!

Don't waste your time

We must remember that it was written in 1972 - prior to "golden days" of NLP, CBT, Body Language and so on. It is absolutely boring and doesn't give any sensible advice what so ever. Yes, I bought it some 3 decades ago and read it recently hoping that it would make some sense, it still doesn't. Books from Richard Wiseman and NLP are more entertaining.

good reference book

I work as an analytical chemist mainly using IR and Raman for unknown identification and for studying various chemical reactions.

This book, together with the The Handbook of Infrared and Raman Characteristic Frequencies of Organic Molecules by Lin~Vien, are the two books that I use almost on a daily base. With the electronic IR/Raman library becoming more and more popular, it is no longer necessary for your to remember all the peak frequencies/intensity. But having a book that compiles all the group frequencies and explains how the various chemical environments could affect the vibrational modes is a must-have if you are a serious vibrational spectroscopist.

i usually use this book for quick reference of the charts or look up a band at a particular frequency. When I want a systematic description of a particular modes or a class of molecules, I would use the book from Lin-Vien. But both book contain both (charts and texts/description/explanation). This book looks more modern and slightly better-organized.

This book is a great reference for analyzing FTIR data. It is very complete and with it in paperback, easy to tote around. The organization of this book is logical and is a great quick reference.

Faisal Devji's The Impossible Indian is an audacious book. He approaches Gandhi counter-intuitively; instead of foregrounding Gandhi's non-violence, Devji explores what he calls 'the temptation to violence.' His earlier work on jihad and terror gives him insights into the fascination with violence as a legitimate means of politics...He shows Gandhi engaged with the question of violence inherent in Empire and fascism. Gandhi is concerned about the civil war in South Africa and the possibility of such a war starting in India. Devji convincingly argues that, for Gandhi, sovereignty and its validation lies not in the State but within the ethical self-a self rooted in dharma and engaged in moral negotiations with real and potential violence. In the course of this argument, Devji also provides a departure from Gandhi's reading of the Bhagvada Gita as a discourse on detached action. Gandhi saw the Gita as a spiritual guidebook, in the sense that it enlightened him in his quest for the moral agency that lay within. This search for a solitary moral agent committed to ethical action and duty, willing to grapple with modernity as also with violence both of the traditional structures and that of modern civilization, makes Devji's Gandhi a political philosopher whose revolutionary potential is yet to be grasped. The Killing Zone

Honest, down to earth and without self-importance, Dorney has written a book which grabs your attention from the outset. He lets you make your own mind up about the politics and high level military decisions that steer the campaign, for this is not a book that carries any political or military statement. So what you get here is the straight forward story of a tour of duty, in which ordinary young men and women achieve extra-ordinary feats in the face of grave danger. Well researched and written in plain english, this is an easy read which allows you to enter the world of the Grenadier Guard infantry soldier (and his supporting elements) where you can vividly imagine each and every situation as it unfolds. It would be impossible not to be touched by the bravery and camaraderie that is shown not just by the Grenadiers but also by their Afghan counterparts.

the killing zone

Just finished reading the book, I really took my time reading it an absorbed every page. It is without doubt a Fantastic written account of what took place on the 2007 tour through the summer months. I dont think the civ pop even reading it could comprehend what everyone that was involved went through on a daily basis......the constant heat, the struggle for resupply an the constant ied threat. Massive well done to every Grenadier involved, R.I.P to everyone who didnt make it Home.

The Killing Fields

It is clear that Skid Dorney has spent a lifetime soldiering, and the picture he paints of the Grenadier Guards in Afganistan is vivid, tough and horrifying.But it shows Britain's young soldiers fighting a tough battle against the Taliban, governed by stupid regulations, never the less showing the spirit of a Regiment 350 years old. Makes you proud to be British.
